How We Help Assure You the Highest Level of Childcare

All candidates are required to fill out a nine-page application form which includes references, health history and a recent photograph.

We also request a detailed autobiographical letter describing themselves, their background, their experiences and their goals.

After reviewing the application from the nanny, we go on to check four references supplied to us, at least two of which must be childcare related.

If the references check out, a personal interview is conducted with a Portland Nannies, Inc. interviewer.

If the candidate is among those recommended for placement, she/he will be matched for interviews with those families that she/he would be most compatible with.

Upon placement a criminal background and department of motor vehicle report is ordered.

When the nanny is hired, she/he is enrolled in a CPR class if she/he isn’t already certified.

We offer up to two paid training classes through Child Care Connections once a nanny is hired.

Upon placement, we send the nanny a welcome packet that includes a listing of local events, activities, other nannies and playgrounds. They also receive our bi-monthly newsletter.

Our Screening Process

When nannies call our offices looking for a position, we send them a detailed application that helps us to better understand who they are and why they want to become a nanny. After reviewing the application, if everything meets our expectations, we invite them to our office for an interview. It is during this interview that we get a good sense of their child care experiences, their personality, and their desire to work with children.

If we think that they would be a good match for the families we serve, we then begin the screening process. The nannies that Portland Nannies, Inc. recommends to families have to meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum of 18 years old
  • HS Grad, although most have attended and/or graduated from college
  • Have at least 1 year experience and/or education in early childhood
  • Willing to make a minimum of a one year commitment
  • CPR certified, or willing to become certified within the first month of employment

We screen each nanny candidate through the following methods:

  • Maine Criminal Background <
  • Maine DMV
  • Previous employment
  • Educational background
  • References
  • Health history
